Sunday is Wedderburn Pacing Cup day.

The stakes have rarely been higher for so many when the stars of the trots track step out for Sunday’s Travel Managers Wedderburn Pacing Cup.

Every race on the card promises a pot of gold to members of the time honoured club, which has introduced a new initiative to reward those who back the club and get trackside.

“We’ve tried something a bit different this year,” club president Nick Youngson said. “We are offering $1000 on each race as a competition to involve the crowd.

“We will draw one member for each horse and whoever has the winner of each race gets the $1000.”

Mr Youngson said the initiative recognised the support the club got from locals, rewarding those who sign up to be club members and attend the big day.

“Membership is the heartbeat of the club,” he said. “We mainly get local people and harness racing people in the district along to our cup day and so we want to reward their loyalty.

“In each race there will be eight very happy people who win $1000, and eight very happy connections of eight winning horses.”

And there will be plenty of other attractions, not least of all the cup itself, with Gunbower Cup winner Bad Boy Brad and in-form pacers Bernie Winkle and Hollys Miss Molly among the early nominees.

“It’s always a good race,” Mr Youngson said. “It has been going for 125 years and it’s always a great day out to be able to get to the track and watch the races. It is all set up on a hill, so there is lots of green grass, and the track is in good nick.”

It’s also a chance for the community to take a well-earned rest.

“At the end of the football season everyone goes their own way and it is good to get everyone back together and catching up again.

“We will get a few Christmas parties held at the day, there will be a pony monte and lots of kids’ entertainment, so it’s a great day out for families and friends.”
