ROBBIE CLOSE
IT’S been a perfect start for Robbie Close as he began his quest for a slice of history in Western Australia tonight.
One of 10 competitors in the Australasian Young Drivers’ Championship, Close is aiming to become the first New Zealander to successfully defend his crown.
As it stands, only two reinsman have won consecutive Championships since its inception in 1976 – both Victorians!
John Caldow was the ground breaker in 1987 and ’88, followed by David Miles in 1994 and ’95.
Close captured the title in his homeland last season and is a step closer to retaining throne after annexing the first heat at Gloucester Park just moments ago.
Partnering the well-supported Livura, Close bided his time before making his move on the home turn.
Proving too slick along the straight, the Nathan Turbey-trained gelding cruised to a soft win from Soho Chelsea, which set the pace for South Australian representative Jayson Finnis.
Victoria’s Jason Lee filled the minor placing with Ohoka Squire, while Ohoka Darcy – a stablemate of the winner – was fourth for Queenslander Nathan Dawson.
“What a great way to kick off my first trip to Perth,” Close said. “When you get to drive nice horses like tonight you’re halfway there.
“Hopefully I can get a few more handy drives for the rest of the races and see how it goes.”
The series continues at Bunbury tomorrow evening with two heats before making its way to Pinjarra on Monday.
