Josh Aiken and Cold Major break the Tabcorp Park Melton track record last Saturday night.

Fresh off breaking champion Smoken Up’s Tabcorp Park Melton track record last weekend, the David Aiken-trained Cold Major will trek to Menangle on Saturday night for a crack at a spot in the Group 1 Miracle Mile.

It will be no easy assignment taking on 2013 winner and two-time Inter Dominion champion Beautide, but Aiken is hopeful of a strong showing from his bombproof seve-year-old.

“We hope they go out and run a quick mile,” Aiken said.

“Shane Tritton also has a couple in the race and I imagine it will be run in around 1:50.0, so I don’t think he will be too far away.”

Aiken said Cold Major had to have things run to suit to perform at his best.

“He just got the perfect trip. He is a very good horse when he follows the fence,” he said.

“When they went so quick in the middle stages last week all he needed was a run and he was going to be in the finish. It was just run at a very quick pace and he appreciated it.”

Aiken also praised Smudge Bromac, who he has engaged in Race 1 at Menangle on Saturday night.

“He was really good last week. He drew bad and had to go back from a wide gate so was a long way off them early. He ran a good fifth in track record time and we are pretty happy with him,” the Avenel horseman said.

Stablemate Juliette Bromac goes around in the Group 2 Sibelia stakes for mares.

“We have always had a good opinion of her. She has raced really good and I probably think that her best run was when she ran third at Bendigo in a sub-55 half where she made ground,” he said.
