Some Kinda Tactics finally had some luck to score an emotional win in the 2016 Cowell Oysters Whyalla Pacing Cup (2050m) at Port Pirie last Friday night.

Backed from good odds of $9.50 into $6.70, Some Kinda Tactics, driven by Ken Rogers scored a 2-1/2 metre win from Amajorjo ($3.10 fav) with Come On Frank ($7.40), five metres away third in a race which rivalled the recent SA Pacing Cup for quality.

The eight-year-old is owned by Lyn Proud and Jon Kingston-Mayne, who also trains the gelding.

Mrs Proud shed a few tears after the win in memory of her late husband Rodney who passed away last year.

“It was Rod who got me involved in harness racing and he picked out Some Kinda Tactics so this win is for him,” Mrs Proud said.

“I love coming to see horses run but it certainly isn’t the same. People are great and make me welcome but I miss him dearly.”

Kingston-Mayne also said he felt a bit emotional as it was the horse’s first feature win since the passing.

“Tonight he finally had a bit of luck,” Kingston-Mayne said.

“Last time he had plenty of pressure and carried a flat tyre for a lap but tonight the race went to perfection.”

From his draw of 11, Some Kinda Tactics settled second last with Come On Frank behind him.

Rogers refused to be drawn into going early and waited until the home straight with a lap to go before pulling out three wide.

Dani Hill, driving the Victorian-owned Amajorjo for trainer Les Harding, pulled out from the running line in front of Some Kinda Tactics to give him a perfect run into the race.

Cillas Boy had led early with Global View outside him and they were expected to prove hard to run down but Amajorjo swept to lead entering the home straight with Some Kinda Tactics looming large and after a battle up the home straight he proved too strong.

Come On Frank, which had trailed Some Kinda Tactics, couldn’t hold his back at the top turn, but showing his renowned courage, came again late to grab third just in front of Stashedbytheriver which sprinted home along the inside.

Kingston-Mayne said the Group 2 Mildura Cup on April 9 was a tentative target for Some Kinda Tactics.

“I think it would be an ideal race for him but it is still two months away and a lot can happen between now and then.”
