A strong performance in the NSW Oaks is normally the best guide to picking the best three year old filly in New South Wales.  In 2014 NSW Oaks winner Shes A Runa was crowned the state’s best while Frith, after being narrowly defeated in the NSW Oaks, dominated the remainder of her three year old season and was a commanding winner the season before.

However in 2014/15, the category is wide open with several fillies performing well at the top level through the season.  Here is a look at the nominations;

Ameretto – Raced 15 times throughout the season and recorded seven victories.  Was placed at the highest level in NSW and Queensland and performed extremely well in the last month of the season.  Only missed a place on four occasions as a three year old.

Bamako Mali – Raced 15 times this season and won only three.  It took Belinda McCarthy several runs before she hit her top form and by the time she was racing at her peak the NSW Oaks was a memory.  Placed in the Breeders Challenge final.

Makes Every Scents – Placed in several feature races throughout the year and only missed the placings twice in a 15 start season.  Was beaten by Read About Lexy twice early in the season but finished the season with a bang winning four of her last five starts.

Read About Lexy – Raced 11 times as a three year old and won on seven occasions including her last four starts before breaking down.  The talented filly has since been retired but her win in the Gold Bracelet at Bathurst was exceptional.

Smooth Showgirl – Had 15 starts for seven wins and four minor placings during the season and won in NSW, Queensland and Victoria.  Missed the final two months of the season after going to the paddock but did enough in feature events to be a contender.  Importantly she was also the first NSW trained filly home in the 2015 NSW Oaks.

The winner will be announced at HRNSW’s Gala Awards night at Doltone House Darling Harbour on Saturday, September 19.  Tickets are available by calling Nancy on 9722 6600.
