LEADING Victorian reinsman Greg Sugars took out Monday’s Noel Smith Memorial Drivers’ Invitation Championship at Horsham.

Sugars, 30, pocketed 34 points to finish two points clear of reigning Noel Smith champion Gavin Lang on 32, with Western Australia’s Colin Brown six points back in third.

Sugars produced a consistent display across the four-race series, winning the third race aboard Liv Lavish and finishing second in the first with Lagoon Beach.

He also finished fifth behind Soho Tokyo in the second event and third on Vivant in the final race.

The Championship recognises the contribution of the late Noel Smith, a Wimmera icon who was dedicated to harness racing at grassroots level.

Recently crowned World Driving Champion Dexter Dunn, from New Zealand, finished eighth in the Noel Smith series.
