In a major boost to the Western Australian breeding industry Racing and Wagering Western Australian (RWWA) has announced a major revamping of the highly successful Westbred Bonus Scheme.

The changes which will benefit both breeders and owners of Western Australian bred horses and are a result of consultation between RWWA and representatives of the WA Standardbred Breeders Association and WA Harness Racing BOTRA.

Recognising the need to provide an immediate stimulus to encourage breeders to remain active in the face of increasing costs, and to provide further incentives for owners to race a Western Australian bred horse, RWWA today announced a number of changes to the Westbred Bonus.

Country Staked 2yo and 3yo races

The Westbred Bonus on races carrying a stake of less than $15,000 has been increased from $3,250 to $3,750 with the payments brought into line with the Metropolitan Staked Westbred Bonus of paying from 1st through 4th place.

Breeders will also benefit from this increase with the 12.5% Breeder Bonus being calculated on the higher Westbred Bonus figures.

Breeders first win bonus

The Westbred Breeders first win bonus will double from $1,000 to $2,000 and will continue to be paid on the occasion of the horse’s first win

Owners first win bonus

A $2000 first win bonus will be paid to the race book owner of a Westbred on the occasion of the horse’s first win regardless of the type of race in which the first win is recorded or the age at which the first win occurs.

Previously this bonus was not paid to owners whose horse recorded its first win in a race carrying a normal Westbred Bonus.

Double Westbred Bonus for WA Sired winners

Should a Westbred Bonus for first place be earned in a 2yo or 3yo race by a Westbred which is also sired by a stallion registered and located in Western Australia at the time of service, then the Westbred Bonus will be doubled.

The double Westbred Bonus for WA sired Westbreds will only apply to the winner and not to place-getters.

Eligibility

The new levels of Westbred Bonus will apply to Westbred foals born after 1st September 2011 which are racing as 2yos and 3yos in the 2014/2015 season.

The new Westbred Bonus will be backdated to commence on 1st September 2014 with connections who have received any form of Westbred Bonus since that date to be paid an adjustment to bring them up to the new Westbred Bonus levels.

Westbred eligibility remains as a horse born, notified and registered, and branded in Western Australia providing that all foaling notification fees have been paid to Racing and Wagering Western Australia.
