NSW Breeders Challenge Owners Bonus Certificates (BCOBCs) on the increase

Traditionally, September is a quiet month for racing. Youngsters are still maturing in the paddock after their first few preparations. Older horses are starting to come back into work after a break following strong campaigns late in the previous season.

For those horses still racing, there are now more opportunities to win a BCOBC than ever before, with the number of eligible horses winning ‘C’ class races in September almost quadrupling in the past five years.

In the three years after their introduction in 2010, BCOBCs were issued to ten individual horses in the month of September.

In 2013, when conditions changed to allow BCOBCs to be won by 5YO and older horses (Series 4 horses onward), the number of certificates issued to eligible horses doubled to 20.

This September, with the changes to programming state wide, there has again been an increase in the number of certificates being won by older eligible horses. The trend is showing horses that have won three or four restricted races are now winning the $4,000 ‘C’ class race and earning their bonus certificate as a 4YO, 5YO or 6YO. There is also a trend for horses that have won their first ‘C’ class race interstate to race in NSW and earn their bonus as well.

To ensure your horse is eligible beyond their 2YO and 3YO seasons, pay either the 2 or 3YO sustaining fee or the Series Fee to be eligible for this bonus.

IT PAYS TO SUSTAIN....
