Beautide winning the 2013 Miracle Mile
NEW South Wales’ biggest harness race, the SEW Miracle Mile, will move to a new time slot next season.
Instead of the traditional November date, the race for Australasia’s fastest pacers will move to a new February time slot in 2016.
In fact the New South Wales Harness Racing Club will shift their whole Sky Racing Carnival of Miracles to February.
The SEW Miracle Mile itself will be run on “Group One Day” on Sunday February 28, 2016, meaning there will be no Miracle Mile run at Tabcorp Park Menangle in 2015.
The Club is looking to build on the momentum created after hosting the Inter Dominion Championships in the February-March timeslot for the past two years [and again in 2015] by moving the SEW Miracle Mile to be part of that sensational day of racing.
The Sky Racing Carnival of Miracles will be run over a three-week period beginning February 13 with the Coca-Cola Amatil Sprint.
The Carnival then continues on February 20 with the Cordina Chicken Farms Sprint and will culminate with the SEW Eurodrive Miracle Mile on Sunday, February 28.
Prizemoney for the elite race is initially expected to stay the same, with the race worth $750,000. According to NSWHRC chairman Ray Sharman: “Sponsors want to be a part of this Carnival which concludes with a host of Group Ones on the Sunday.
“The club is excited to be able to use our greatest race, the Miracle Mile, to form part of a meeting that has already been described as the best day’s racing on the Australasian calendar,” he said.
“By having a race of the prestige and international significance of the Miracle Mile at this time of year, it also opens up the opportunity for us to gain the continued support of Destination NSW and the free-to-air coverage generated from Channel Nine.”
NSWHRC chief executive Bruce Christison added: “The Club has been pleased with the level of media interest in both the Inter Dominion and Miracle Mile.
“The CIub has been considering the move but needed to wait for confirmation of the Perth bid before a final decision could be made.
“The Board had intended to discuss the matter at tomorrow’s (Thursday) Board Meeting and then make an announcement.
“Due to the level of media interest following Perth’s announcement on Tuesday we brought that forward.”
