Colin McDowell will represent Australia in the World Amateur Drivers Championship in July.

The 2014 Amateur World Driver’s Championship will be held in Finland in July with Australia to be represented by NSW’s Colin McDowell.

The Amateur series is open to drivers who do not derive their primary income from driving in races.

McDowell, who drives for his son Dean, said he is honoured to be able to represent Australia.

“To represent your country is a dream for anybody,” said McDowell.

“I am truly honoured to be able to do it in the sport I love.”

Trotting is one of Finland’s most popular sports.

Approximately 600 meetings are held every year, with almost 8,000 horses and more than 2,000 drivers participating.

There are some 160 professional trainers in Finland. More than 7,000 people are registered in the amateur trainer register. The annual total turnover from horse betting is approximately 300 million AUD.
In international comparison, Finland is among the five largest trotting countries in Europe.

The Amateur series kicks off on Sunday July 6 with three races to be run at Riihimaki. A further three races are to be run on July 8 at Finland’s second biggest track, Tamperen Ravirata, Tievo.  The final three events will be conducted at Vermon Ravirata (Finland’s main track) on Wednesday July 9.
