August may have been a record-breaking month for iconic reinsman Chris Alford but the next few months appear to be the icing on the cake for the winner of 4970 races as a driver.

As Gavin Lang did in August 13 months ago, the Bolinda trainer/driver is closing in on the almost mythical figure of 5000 wins in the sulky.

Predicted to come sometime within the next 10 weeks, Harness Racing Victoria will celebrating by running a ‘nearest to the pin’ competition where all you have to do is pick the date on which he will notch up the achievement.

To enter, all you have to do is tag @HRVNews on Twitter and include #Alfords5000 along with your guess. The winning entry will receive a dinner for four people on Victoria Cup night this year.

Having driven his first winner behind Spring Vance in 1984, Alford achieved the much lauded century of winners in just his third season driving.

Since the 1992/3 season the champion driver has notched up at least the century mark in each year, with double centuries a fixture of his report card in the last five terms.

If there is more than one correct entry the winners will go into a random draw to decide who is the winner of the dinner for four at Victoria Cup night on December 14.

If Alford is yet to drive his 5000 winner by the Monday leading into the Victoria Cup, and there is still more than one live entry, the prize will be paid out on Great Southern Star night 2014.

There is a maximum of one entry per person and entries close this Friday (September 13) at 6pm with the winner announced when Alford notches up his 5000th winner.
