Choise Achiever - After winning the 2012 Hunter Cup

The Cobram HRC situated on the border of Victoria and NSW staged their annual cup day program on Thursday December 27 attended by a large number of holiday makers.

The two highlights of the afternoon being the $25,000 Jim Phillips Memorial Cobram Pacing Cup for M0 or better class (Discretionary Handicapped) over 2678 metres and the $15,000 Central Murray Credit Union Cobram Trotters Cup for TMO or better class (D-H) over the same distance.
This years A.G. Hunter Cup winner Choise Achiever scored his first race win since, when victorious in the pacers cup.
Trained by Tim Butt and driven by John Caldow, Choise Achiever coming from a daunting 30 metre backmark settled mid-field in the moving line, with multiple cups winner Veranjee beginning swiftly from 10 metres to be handed the lead on a platter by Amadmancomesundone entering the straight on the first occasion.
The position outside the leader changed several times, with the David Aiken trained trio Atlas Alliance, Smudge Bromac and Composed all taking turns to occupy the “death-seat” at various stages.
With Chris Alford applying plenty of pressure to the leader approaching the home turn, Composed gained the upper hand on straightening and was being hailed the winner, when Choise Achiever four wide off a three wide double trail sprouted wings over the concluding stages to snatch victory by a half head, with Washmepockets producing a massive effort to finish third 1.6 metres away after missing the start hopelessly, giving his rivals up to 40 metres start.
A 6-Y-0 gelded son of Courage Under Fire and Silent Achiever, Choise Achiever returned a mile rate of 2-01.2 (last half mile 56.2 – quarter 27). His win in the Cobram Pacing Cup was his 13th career victory and took his stakemoney earnings past the $500,000 mark.
In the Cobram Trotters Cup, six year old Continentalman/Sylvias Star gelding Bellingham a winner of the Yarra Valley Trotters Cup on December 14, chalked up another cup victory for Huntly (Bendigo) trainer/driver Anthony Crossland in similar fashion.
Always well back in the capacity field after starting from the 10 metre mark with ex-Kiwi Musgrove now in the care of Brent Lilley striding clear shortly after the start from outside the second line, Bellingham gained a three wide double trail on the back of both Cold Sister and La Mosca in the final circuit.
My High Expectations which had moved into the open mid-race was hard pressed to get on terms with Musgrove on the home turn, with Cold Sister three wide when Musgrove who appeared to be coasting going off stride changing the complexion of the race.
This left the two David Aiken trained stablemates looking likely to fight out the finish, with Bellingham producing a dynamic burst out wide to blouse the pair on the wire.

The margins being a half head by 3.1 metres in a mile rate of 2-03.4.
