Part owner Peter Gadsby was thrilled when his pacer Smoken Up was announced New South Wales Harness Horse Of The Year for last season. Gadsby believes the dual Miracle Mile winner deserved the accolade and is looking forward to seeing Australasia’s fastest pacer back in NSW next year.
“It was great to see Smoken Up win NSW Horse Of The Year for the second year in a row and I think after he won the Miracle Mile and Len Smith Mile he fully deserved the title,” Gadsby said.
“It was great recognition for the horse and Lance (Justice trainer), it is just a shame that he didn’t win Australian Horse Of The Year as well after the season he had.”
Gadsby is confident Smoken Up will compete in Australia’s biggest races this season including the Miracle Mile and Inter Dominion both of which will be run at Tabcorp Park Menangle.
“Short term obviously the Victoria Cup is the race that he will be set for but having both the Inter Dominion and the Miracle Mile at Menangle is going to be ideal for the horse because he just races so well there.”
“He’s ticking over nicely, he won’t race as much as he normally does at this time of year because the Miracle Mile has been moved but hopefully he will create history by winning it for the third time.”
Smoken Up has not been beaten in a heat of the Inter Dominion for the past two years.
“He won his heats in Auckland and won all three heats in Perth this year, obviously the Inter Dominion will be a different series and a different race this time but he is yet to miss a place at Menangle throughout his career and has recorded some of his biggest wins on the track.”
“He has already run third in an Inter Dominion at Menangle hopefully he can go a couple better next year and win it.”
