Australia’s best pacer Im Themightyquinn can become the first dual winner of the Group Two Mount Eden Sprint if he can overcome a wide draw and win tomorrow night at Gloucester Park.
The premier sprint race in Western Australia was inaugurated in 1972 to recognise the achievements of inaugural WA Racing Industry Hall Of Fame inductee Mount Eden who amazed race-goers with his win in the 1971 NSW Miracle Mile at Harold Park and the 1971 Christmas Handicap at Gloucester Park.
Even though the honour roll for the Mount Eden Sprint includes the names of the likes of Pure Steel, Village Kid, The Falcon Strike, Rowleyalla and Australia’s first 1:55 pacer Classic Garry no horse has won the race twice.
Im Themightyquinn won this race last season covering the 1700 metres at a 1:53.5 rate and easily beating Can Return Fire and Scan Air. The fast time was the result of Has The Answers leading and free-wheeling in front.
Both Gary Hall Snr and Jnr have each won the race three times previously with Bengeeman, The Falcon Strike and last year with Im Themightyquinn.
Fred R Kersley holds the driving record for the Mount Eden Sprint with six wins while Greg Harper holds the training record with four wins.
Gary Hall Snr shares second spot on the trainers list for the race with Rod Chambers (3 wins) and Fred R Kersley (3 wins).
