Bankstown President Les Bentley is looking forward to the “Monte” race at Bankstown Paceway.

‘Le trot monte, also known as ‘racing under saddle’, will be reintroduced in New South Wales at Sydney’s Bankstown Paceway on Saturday, December 1st, 2012 to coincide with the 30th running of the Group 1 M. H. Treuer Memorial at Bankstown’s K S Black & Co Carnival of Cups meeting.

Originally introduced in Australia around 150 years ago, trot monte involves standardbred race horses, or “trotters”, being ridden with a saddle rather than being driven using a cart, known as a “gig.

‘These races have not been seen on most Australian harness racecourses since the 1980s – and Bankstown Paceway is delighted to welcome them back on track,’ said Bankstown President Les Bentley.

‘Trot monte racing trials will be conducted in conjunction with Bankstown’s next race meetings on Monday, November 5th, and Monday, November 19th, in order to make the first official event on Saturday, December 1st, a full TAB betting race.

Harness Racing New South Wales are finalising the guidelines for riders and horses to compete in the T0 to T3 Monte event and they will be distributed to the Industry in the near future.
