Can Destreos Do It Again

Tough; Destreos is chasing another feature race victory in the Gold Coast Cup this weekend.

Resilient pacer Destreos surprised even his most ardent supporters last week.

The veteran pacer stormed to victory winning the Gr.3 $30,000 Be Good Johnny Sprint at Albion Park downing boom pacers Motu Crusader and Terrorway in a time of 1;52.9 for the 1660m event.

Well, can he repeat the dose this weekend?

The reigning Albion Park Horse of the Year has drawn gate five in the Gr.2 $75,000 Kevin & Kay Seymour Seymour Gold Coast Cup at Parklands on Saturday night.

“After last weekend, you can never say never. He is truly a remarkable horse with that typical never say die attitude.” Regular driver Kelli Dawson said.

History shows that the Gold Coast Cup hasn’t been the kindest race for Destreos but that could easily change this weekend.

The Astreos gelding finished 7^th in 2009 and 6^th the following year behind recently retired champion Blacks A Fake while he ran 5^th last year behind Victorian ace Smoken Up.

“Most probable thought his best days were behind him but he proved last week how big of a heart he has, I’ve never driven a horse as determined as Destreos.

His form warrants respect going into the weekend but the draw looks a little tricky on paper, I’m hoping to give him a good drive early to find a handy position.

Again, the McCarthy horses (Washakie & Terrorway) look the obvious dangers but I also respect Captain Joy too. I know Destreos will be trying all the way to the finish line.”

The Gr.3 Be Good Johnny Sprint victory last week provided Dawson with her biggest thrill in the sport to date.
