Since arriving in New South Wales, Gaius Caesar has had five runs for Condell Park trainer Darren Binskin and has won four races at Tabcorp Park Menangle. Binskin is amazed with the job the son of Julius Caesar has done considering the serious hoof injury the gelding has had to overcome.
“Gaius Caesar has done a little bit better than I thought he would do at Menangle because he had developed a condition called seedy toe which is a bacterial infection in the wall of the hoof and I had to cut away a great deal of his foot to fix the problem,” Binskin said.
“I made up a special shoe for the horse to help him while he was dealing with the problem, it was actually a technique I learned while I was in North America and it helped him get over it.”
Binskin acknowledges Gaius Caesar is not the most talented horse in his stable however what he lacks in class he makes up for with his determination.
“He is not a very big horse and he doesn’t carry much condition and with a horse like him you would think he wouldn’t be able to handle too much work but he is completely the opposite, he is a great training horse, he just loves the work and he actually sulks if he doesn’t get out to train.”
“I’m not sure how much further he can go but he is definitely a horse that is suited by racing every week so he will race again at Menangle this weekend over 2300 metres and Lauren (Panella) will drive him so I can utilise her claim.”
Gaius Caesar has won 22 races from only 40 starts and has banked more than $85,000 prizemoney, with nearly half of that earned since the start of September.
“I think he is really well suited on the bigger track, the way he is going has shocked me but it seems that he has just clicked with us.”
