Popular trainer Doug Lee will move permanently to Queensland later this year after enjoying plenty of success during his 25 years in Cowra. A regular visitor to the Carnival Of Cups meetings across New South Wales, Lee is hoping to return with the right horse in the future.

“I have loved the people I have met in the country, they are wonderful people and I am going to miss days like Canola Cup Day at Eugowra but hopefully I will be back with one good enough to compete in some of the nice country races,” Lee said.

“Joedy (wife) and I thought it was time for a change and I love the trotters and there are very few trotting races in New South Wales outside of Sydney so I will be in Queensland by December 1.”

Lee has already sold his property in New South Wales and agreed to rent in Logan Village.

“Our place was on the market for a week and was sold pretty much straight away but I have been able to find a good place up there which is a street away from the McCarthy property, it is set on 13 acres has seven stables under a barn and also has a 550 metre sandtrack, so it is everything I’m looking for.”

“I will be taking a few of the horses I am training at the moment with me and if I could have seven horses in work up there it would be ideal.”

Lee’s trotter Best Bits was forced to do plenty of travelling last preparation to compete in races at Menangle and Bankstown.

“I think he travelled to Sydney 14 weeks in a row and all of that travel takes a lot out of the horse so it will be a lot easier for him being closer to all of the action in Queensland.”

“I made the move to Cowra from Penrith 25 years ago and never looked back so I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life and also the warmer weather.”
