Karloo Mick is now twelve years old but veteran trainer Barry Lew couldn’t be happier with the gelding and has set the son of Panorama for another tilt at Eugowra’s Don Tildsley Memorial. The grand campaigner has run second in the race the past two years but Lew is hoping to go one better this year.

“The plan is to take him to Eugowra and have another crack at the sprint race, he is really good at the moment, he looks good, he feels good and he is as sound as a bell so it is time for him to race,” Lew said.

“The plan was to get him fit by giving him a few trials but it has been a bit hard to find any so hopefully I can give him a good hit out this week in preparation for next Monday.”

Lew has shed nine kilograms recently and was looking forward to returning to the sulky but regular driver Robbie Morris has put an end to that.

“I’ve lost some weight doing a bit of exercise and some weights and I was planning on having a drive but when I told Robbie that I was going to jump in the cart at Eugowra he said that he would make the trip up to help me out, so he will be driving the old bloke now.”

“Ideally I would have loved the opportunity to get some speed into his legs because I work him solidly over longer trips and while it helps get him fit it does take a bit of zip out of his legs but I’m sure his heart will take him a long way.”

There are no plans to head to Queensland for the start of the Grand Circuit next month.

“No at this stage I won’t be going north, I’m really busy here at home with six horses in work, I just want to see him make a good return and if he comes through it well then I might start looking at some races a bit closer to home.”

“He is only 75% fit at this stage and he will get better with a few runs under his belt but it is nice to have him back at the races.”
