Former Geelong Cup and Inter Dominion Consolation winner Our Malabar has switched stables and is now under the care of veteran trainer Harry Martin. The gelding has won more than $500,000 in his career and will have his first start for Martin on Saturday night at Tabcorp Park Menangle according to part owner Peter Gadsby.
“We have brought Our Malabar up from Lance Justice’s stable to New South Wales for a couple of reasons, the most important of those being an attempt to rebuild the horse’s confidence because he has been struggling in the top grade in Victoria,” Gadsby said.
“That’s the beauty of racing at Menangle, they run races and include clauses like ‘for horses that haven’t won $5,000 in their last five starts’ and with races like that it allows our syndicate a chance to get a horse like Our Malabar into a bit of form.”
Gadsby believes Our Malabar will not need to improve greatly to return to the winners list in Sydney.
“His form might read poor numerically but if you sit down and analyse his recent runs they aren’t that bad, his individual times have been very quick so it won’t take much for him to win again.”
Our Malabar’s last win was at Tabcorp Park Menangle on May 4 when he recorded a blistering 1:52.4 for the mile.
“It made sense to transfer the horse to Sydney because he has raced really well at Menangle in the past, he has been plagued with bad barriers and second row draws make it very hard for him whereas starting ten horses off the front at Menangle is another plus because his gatespeed can be used.”
“Harry Martin is also training So Talk About Courage for our group, we sent him the horse because he had a few feet issues and Harry did a great job with Double Identity for me and nursed him through a few hoof problems.”
Our Malabar will compete in race one at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday night which is timed to begin at 5:47pm.
