It has been more than 12 months since 2010 Bathurst Gold Crown winner Beetson has raced however trainer Peter Trevor-Jones is just about ready to produce the five year old son of Art Major. Trevor-Jones was forced to give the gelding time off in April last year after he noticed an issue with a tendon.
“Beetson raced at Dubbo in April 2011 and he had a little bubble on his tendon so I had it scanned and was given the advice that the best thing for him was time off so he has had a good break and everything is perfect with his leg now,” Trevor-Jones said.
“I have two options for him, I would love to target the Canola Cup at Eugowra at the end of September or I can try and qualify him for one of the rich Menangle country finals.”
Trevor-Jones is a big supporter of Eugowra’s feature event but is unsure whether he can have Beetson fully fit for the heat and final.
“It is the best country event in New South Wales and I have had some success in consolations in the past however I have never been able to win the big one.”
“Because it is for C0 pacers and he has had so long off I’m finding it hard to find restricted races to get him fully fit so that’s what made me think about setting him for the next country final at Menangle and there are heats at Wagga and Newcastle coming up, so I just have to work out which way to go.”
Beetson won a trial at Bathurst on Monday night and Trevor-Jones was happy with the hit-out.
“He was well in front coming to the home turn but wanted to wait for them a bit turning for home and he won by about a half a length, I think they ran the final quarter in 28.4 or something but they didn’t do a lot early in the trial.”
“There was definitely some improvement last week when he was beaten going 2:01, he has grown so much since he was a two year old and has filled right out.”
