Connections of talented mare Louvre will target the new four year old Breeders Challenge Mares Final next year in an attempt to clean sweep the series. The daughter of Art Major won the Breeders Challenge Final as a two and three year old and Michael Doltoff, a representative of the Susan Hunter stable, was full of praise for Harness Racing New South Wales after it announced the initiative earlier this week.
“It’s a great idea by New South Wales and I congratulate the people behind the decision to run a four year old Breeders Challenge Final this season, there aren’t many four year old feature races around Australia especially for the mares,” Doltoff said.
“Because of the lack of feature four year old mares’ races you can understand why some people retire their good three year old fillies and concentrate on breeding with them, while there are races like the Chariots Of Fire and New Zealand’s Taylor Mile and Messenger Championship it is very hard for the mares to compete against the boys at that age.”
Louvre is currently in the spelling paddock and will have up to two months off before returning to work.
“She’ll have a good let-up, hopefully she will continue to grow and strengthen because she has loads of ability as she has proven in both her Breeders Challenge Final wins.”
“Louvre didn’t have much luck in the Breeders Crown Final at Melton because she got caught wide when they were running a pretty slick last half and that really isn’t her go but Sue is really looking forward to her four year old season especially with the announcement of this new feature race.”
Both of the Four Year Old Breeders Challenge Finals will carry prizemoney of $100,000 and will be run over the 2300 metres at Tabcorp Park Menangle.
“Harness Racing in New South Wales continues to go forward and it is quite clearly the leading state in Australia, it has great prizemoney levels, the racing is competitive and the right decisions are being made by those running the sport.”
Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) is the controlling body for harness racing in New South Wales with responsibility for commercial and regulatory management of the industry including 31 racing clubs across the State. HRNSW is headed by an industry-appointed Board of Directors and is independent of Government.
