Bathurst driver Jason Turnbull could be out of the sulky for up to four months after sustaining an injury to his knee after a nasty race fall at Young last week. Turnbull was forced to undergo surgery to repair the damage and has now begun the long recovery process.

“I haven’t spoken to a doctor since leaving the hospital last Thursday but one of the nurses told me that it could be Christmas time before my knee would be right but I’m hoping it won’t be that long,” Turnbull said.

“It’s been pretty good since the operation and I haven’t needed any pain relief since I was discharged but I would be guessing there will some physiotherapy down the track once I can remove the brace that is on my leg at the moment.”

Turnbull suffered a laceration to his knee in the fall and was taken to Young Hospital to have it assessed immediately.

“There was no doctor on at Young so three nurses were looking after the hospital and one of them tried to clean the dirt out of the wound but couldn’t and suggested that I got home to get a few hours sleep before heading to Orange Hospital the following day (Tuesday).””

“I got admitted to Orange early the next morning but had to wait until lunchtime for a bed, they started the operation at around 5pm and while the doctor was cleaning the cut he noticed that I had torn a muscle off the knee so it had to be fixed too.”

Initially it was expected that Turnbull would need to wear a knee brace for a fortnight but after discovering the torn muscle, the brace will need to be worn for up to six weeks.

“I am 30 now but I won’t be rushing back and risk being crippled in 15 years time, I will be doing everything that the doctors tell me.”

“There are always people worse off than you are and my thoughts go out to the people who lost horses in the Leeton stable fire last week.”
