Bathurst horseman Steve Turnbull.
Bathurst horseman Steve Turnbull is enjoying one of his best seasons as a trainer in a career that has spanned three decades and believes his current success comes from all of the hard work put in by his family. Fresh from a recent holiday in Queensland, Turnbull is looking forward to the new season starting this weekend.
“I am having a great run at the moment but it really is a team effort, my wife Jenny is a great help around the stables and Amanda (daughter) is driving in great form which is a big help,” Turnbull said.
“My boys are doing a good job too, Mitchell does plenty of work and will be a concession driver next season, Nathan is my blacksmith now and Josh breaks all of my horses in which allows me to have 30 or 40 race horses working all year around, a lot more than previous years when I had to make room for 40 or 50 young ones that I was breaking in.”
Turnbull is also getting help from two well known identities around the stables.
“Billy Aspros was a great jockey around New South Wales and gives me a hand and A.D (Turnbull) still works some for me as well so I think a lot of this year’s success can be put down to the people around me.”
On Saturday night Turnbull will take three horses to Tabcorp Park Menangle and is expecting a strong showing from My Dusky Sound in race two.
“I have a lot of time for him, I haven’t had him for very long and the only occasion he was beaten since arriving was when I went to Menangle and got trapped wide but he has won at Bathurst since by 20 metres, it won’t be an easy race to win but I am expecting him to be very competitive.”
“I am taking another two runners to Menangle on Saturday, Ardle McArdle has done a good job and while I’m not sure how much further he can go, I’m really happy with him while Veracity Red has been knocking on the door at his last two and if he was to win it wouldn’t be a huge shock.”
