Harness Racing Tasmania Award winners for 2002-03 were announced at the Edgar Tatlow Medal Dinner held at the Wrest Point Hotel Casino on Saturday Night, 20th September, 2003. HARRIET HALO ? BELMONT BOWL The Belmont Bowl is awarded to the 2YO Filly with the greatest aggregated success in the three Belmont Pace Finals. Les and Pat Bromfield, to commemorate the influence of their outstanding sire Scotty Belmont, provided the perpetual trophy that is awarded each year. Harriet Halo, owned by Maggie and Dick Eaves, Robert Brown and Graeme Jones, won the Devonport Final and finished second at Launceston and Hobart. She was trained by Dick Eaves and driven by Ricky Duggan, Leigh Plunkett, Steven Turnbull and Kate McLeod. SHELLEY BARNES ? THE WAKEFUL CLUB LEADING LADY DRIVER The Wakeful Club is made up of a group of ladies with a passion for racing. They provide sponsorship for Thoroughbred and Harness Racing with an emphasis on recognising the achievements of female participants. Shelley completed the season with 7 wins and 17 placings from 92 drives for $31,948 in prize money. Her victories included 3 wins with Yakovlev Leis and two on Tough Rock. SHELLEY BARNES ? THE WAKEFUL CLUB LEADING LADY TRAINER Shelley continued her dominance of this award. From 81 starters she recorded 5 wins and 18 placing?s for $25,395 in prize money. Her winners were Yakovlev Leis, Without Wings and Right Ark. COLSTA ? TOTE TASMANIA 2YO COLT OR GELDING OF THE YEAR COLSTA was the unanimous selection as 2YO Colt or Gelding of the Year. Owned by Colin Johnstone and his Father in Law, Stan Rossendell, COLSTA had 5 starts for 4 wins including the Dandy Patch Final and the Cadbury Sweepstakes Final. His stake earnings totalled $38,086. He was trained and driven by Neville Webberley. TENIRAMA ? KELL-CILL STUD 3YO FILLY OF THE YEAR Rick and Naomi Hinds are the proprietors of Kell-Cill Stud. They stand Jaguar Spur, Genghis Khan, Tiger Woods and J J?s Pennant. TENIRAMA owned by Pauline Barker and Cliff and Betty Robins, was the winner of the Kell-Cill Stud 3YO Filly of the Year Award. Tenirama raced on 17 occasions for 6 wins and 7 placings for $46,307 in prize money. She won the $25,000 Tasmanian Oaks and the Killarney Stud Bouquet and finished second in the Bullock Consulting Bandbox Final. She was trained by Fred Barker and driven by Scott Ford, Neville Webberley, Fred Barker, John Caldow and Andrew Rawlings. GOTCHA MATE ? CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS 3YO COLT OR GELDING OF THE YEAR Corporate Communications is Tasmania?s leading public relations and marketing communications consultancy company. GOTCHA MATE, owned by Pat and Susan Stanley, was a decisive winner of the Corporate Communications 3YO Colt or Gelding of the Year Award. Gotcha Mate started 20 times for 8 wins and 3 seconds for $34,052 in prize money. He won the Carrick Park Country Derby and a heat of the J Boag and Son Globe Derby and finished second in two heats of the Australasian Breeders Crown and a close third in the Launceston Pacing Club 3YO Championship from the backmark of 30 metres. He competed in two of Australasia?s premier 3YO races. He finished 7th, beaten 9.6 metres, in the $103,900 Australasian Breeders Crown Final and 8th, beaten 10.5 metres, in the Qantas Australia Derby. Gotcha Mate was trained by Mark Stanley and Barry Alford and driven by Mark Stanley, Chris Alford, Brian Gath and John Caldow. LOURDES ? BERRIEDALE STUD MARE OF THE YEAR Leigh Plunkett is the proprietor of Berriedale Stud standing Resurgent Dragon, Time Stands Still and Zyuganov Leis. Lourdes is owned by Colin Johnstone and Teena Webberley and was a unanimous choice for the award. She had 8 starts for 6 wins and 2 placings and $49,627 in prize money. She won two $25,000 races - the George Johnson and the J Boag and Son Golden Mile. Recently she was sold and is now racing in America. She was trained and driven by Neville Webberley. DAMAN ? DUNHAM ELECTRICAL 4YO & OLDER HORSE OR GELDING OF THE YEAR Dunham Electrical cater for the full range of electrical contracting and specialise in all aspects of high voltage testing. DAMAN, owned by Don McVilly and Ray Pullen, was the overwhelming choice for the Dunham Electrical 4YO and Older Horse of the Year. From 12 Tasmanian starts Daman recorded 6 wins and 4 placing?s for $68,749 in prize money. His wins included the $25,000 Devonport Cup and the $25,000 Metropolitan Cup. He finished second in the $100,000 Tasmanian Pacing Championship, the Hobart Pacing Cup and the Westbury Cup. DAMAN was trained and driven by Ray Pullen. MARLEE JAYNE - TOPNOTCHER - BROODMARE OF THE YEAR Geoff Madden is standing Topnotcher USA at his Thirlstane Stud. Marlee Jayne, an outstanding racehorse, was a clear winner in the Topnotcher Broodmare of the Year award. She had 17 starts for 10 wins and 5 placings for $52,366 in prize money. As a 3YO she won the Bullock Consulting Bandbox Final and finished second in the Tasmanian Oaks. Her progeny have inherited her ability and amazing strike rate. Her first foal Lourdes had 8 Tasmanian starts this season for 6 wins and two placing?s and $49,627 in prize money. Her second foal, Colsta, had 5 starts for 4 wins and a second for $38,056 in prize money. Between them they won 1 $20,000 race and three $25,000 races. Marlee Jayne?s only other progeny is a yearling Dream Away (USA) colt and she is currently in foal to D M Dillinger. CHER MON AMOUR ? BRAEBOURNE STUD 2YO FILLY OF THE YEAR Ken Austin, the owner of Braebourne Stud, stands Fitch II USA, Andrel USA, Shiver Me Timbers, Cellular Fella and the skewbald stallion Medicine Dance. CHER MON AMOUR was the unanimous selection for the Braebourne Stud 2YO Filly of the Year. She started 6 times for 5 wins and a second for $44,213 in prize money. Cher Mon Amour?s wins included the Evicus Final, the Cadbury Sweepstakes Final, the Blue Bonnet and the Launceston Belmont Final. She is owned by Rodney Gould, Rodney Whelan and Ken Hall. Cher Mon Amour was trained by Ross Freeman and driven by Ross Freeman and Don Peck. HARNESS RACING TASMANIA JUNIOR DRIVER AWARD ? GARETH RATTRAY Eighteen Year Old Longford driver Gareth Rattray has had a remarkable season. In April he won the Australasian Young Drivers Championship in New Zealand and he has won the Harness Racing Tasmania Leading Junior Driver Award for the second consecutive year. He had 211 drives for 21 winners and 55 placing?s for $114,423 in prize money. His best win was when he drove his grandfathers horse, Karalta Gem to victory in the $8,000 Bullock Consulting Burnie Cup. HARNESS RACING TASMANIA LEADING DRIVER AWARD ? RICKY DUGGAN (pictured) Thirty Three Year Old New Norfolk driver Ricky Duggan is Tasmania?s leading driver for the second time having previously won the Award in 97-98. He finished the season with a driving record of 54 wins and 85 placing?s from 278 starts for $254,270 in stake earnings. His major wins included the $25,000 Granny Smith with Milady Meg, victories in five $8,000 races ? with Fleet Express in the Eric Reece Memorial and the St. Ledger, Holly May in the Fillies Championship, Mountain Glory in the Governors Cup and Shillelagh in the Northern Tasmania Light Harness Association Cup. He also drove Harriet Halo to win the $6,000 Belmont Final at Devonport. HARNESS RACING TASMANIA LEADING TRAINER AWARD ? PHILLIP FORD Phillip Ford, a 29YO professional trainer from Brighton, has won his first Tasmanian Trainers Title. Phillip recorded 36 wins and 72 placings from 280 starters. His best wins were on the North West Coast where Allbutasaint won the Sheffield Cup at Spreyton and Romar Lady won the Tasfuel Liza Storm at Burnie. Phillip has demonstrated his ability as a trainer through consistently improving horses from other stables. He is a master at placing his horses in suitable races. SOUTHERN CROSS TELEVISION HORSE OF THE YEAR ? DAMAN DAMAN is the winner of a closely contested Southern Cross Television Tasmania Horse of the Year Award. Daman arrived in Tasmania with his ex pat trainer/driver Ray Pullen with the major summer/autumn open class races in mind. Daman and Ray were very successful winning 6 races and being placed four times from 12 starts for $68,749 in stake money. His wins included the $25,000 Devonport Cup and the $25,000 Metropolitan Cup. He finished second in the $100,000 Tasmanian Pacing Championship, the Hobart Pacing Cup and the Westbury Cup. DAMAN was trained and driven by Ray Pullen. End??
