Wyperfeld will go in search of another feature win in the Ladyship Cup
Wyperfeld won a Vicbred Super Series final when no one expected it and her trainer John Hallam is hoping she can again surprise when she graduates to open mares’ company this Friday night at Moonee Valley.
The daughter of Our Sir Vancelot, who won the Vicbred 4YO Mares Final as a $90 chance on May 8, will take on a crack field in the second leg of the VSB&SA Mares’ Triple Crown; the $30,000 Group 3 VSB&SA Ladyship Cup.
“She’s certainly going from the kindergarten up to the high school,” Shepparton-based Hallam said.
“If you look at times she shouldn’t have too much to worry about (to be competitive), but it’s about the horses you’re racing against and when you do go from four-year-olds up to open class it’s a different type of racing.
“So we don’t really know, but now that she’s drawn where she has I’m certainly hopeful she’ll be weighing into the money (top five).”
Wyperfeld will start from barrier eight – inside the back row – in the 1609-metre event at 8.42pm.
Often a despised a starting position, it can be a blessing at Moonee Valley and Hallam won’t be devastated if that’s where Vicbred-winning reinsman John Caldow finds himself.
Wyperfeld trails out fellow four-year-old Howards Dilemma, who will start from the same alley she came from in the Vicbred final when she finished second after taking a sit behind the leader.
“Obviously Chris (Alford, driver of Howards Dilemma) will be handing up to someone, but I’d be very keen to see him follow the leader and we be three-back the pegs,” he said.
“It’s not a bad place to be, especially in a mile race. Sometimes it’s the strong horses that win the mile races, especially if they’re run really truly, and that’s what we’re hoping for.”
Wyperfeld’s hopes were made slightly easier this morning when in-form Queenslander Elle M Aye, who had drawn barrier two, was scratched.
But she still has some classy interstaters to contend with, led by Paul Fitzpatrick-trained duo Redemption and Lady Lexus, along with top Victorian mares Jazzam and Lucky Elsie.
After Friday night’s race, the VSB&SA Mares’ Triple Crown culminates with the $100,000 Group 1 Nevele R Stud Queen Of The Pacific at Moonee Valley on May 29.
