Echunga (SA) hobby breeder Mark Carey boasts a record that would make him the envy of many standardbred breeders in the country.
Carey, who has nominated two prime lots in next Sunday’s Allwood Stud Farm SA Yearling Sale, has been breeding pacers and trotters for more than 30 years.
“One of the first horses I bred was Kingsford. He won 30 races at Gloucester Park, Moonee Valley and Globe Derby Park and almost $175,000 in stakes,” the former Harness Racing SA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said.
“One year I bred eight mares and got seven foals and they all raced winning nearly 100 races between them.”
Undoubtedly the standout performer bred by Carey has been the Dream Away mare Repelem, a winner of 41 races including the Southern Cross 2YO and 3YO Finals, the Ian Daff Memorial and the Gawler Oaks and $266,346.
Other winners from that vintage crop in 2007 included Zabreez (10 wins), a half-sister to Kingsford; Heza Showman (21 wins), Big Henry (13 wins), Perfect Bliss (5 wins) and Paua Art (3 wins).
Repelem, one of 15 broodmares currently owned by Carey, is the dam of promising three-year-old Revolt, a $70,000 yearling who has won twice from only a few starts, and a Somebeachsomewhere yearling filly who fetched $50,000 at Sunday’s Australian Pacing Gold sale at Oaklands Junction.
Carey is offering colts from the very successful racemares Holla (Lot 7) and Majeur Le Crest (Lot 11) at next Sunday’s auction at the Magic Millions, Morphettville.
Holla, a Moonee Valley winner and Southern Cross 2YO Final placegetter who banked $71,000 for Carey, ranks as a half-sister to eight winners including the dual Southern Cross winner Endeared ($244,650), now the dam of the Vicbred Super Series champion Enrolled ($114,424) and The Dapper Don ($91,739).
Holla herself is the dam of the thrice winner Look At The Stars.
She is represented at the Sale by a colt by the NZ and Australian 2YO of the Year Follow The Stars, who was credited with his first juvenile winner from his initial crop in WA last Saturday.
Majeur Le Crest, the winner of 10 races and runner-up to Beauty Secret in the Southern Cross 2YO Final, is represented by her second foal and first colt, a son of the USA 3YO Colt of the Year Heston Blue Chip, now making an impact with his first crop in North America.
An Art Major mare, Majeur Le Crest is a half-sister to the dams of $100,000 winners Crusaders Crest and Boris Reigns and is closely related to the SA Golden Nursery winner Dont Tell William and the SA Derby placegetter Gowan Brae.
“The colt belongs to a terrific maternal family that goes back to the Hall of Fame broodmare The Old Maid,” Mark said.
The two lovely colts can be inspected at Mandy Pascoe’s Birdwood property.
