Lifelong trots trainer-driver Ron Gilligan’s life will be honoured at a Gisborne service next Tuesday.
Mr Gilligan, who passed aged 77 after a short battle with illness, obtained his licence at age 20 and was a participant for almost 60 years, with his success including Roma’s Son, a winner in the ‘70s at the Showgrounds and on the country circuit.
“He’s always been involved in the horses,” said his son Shane, himself a trainer-driver. “He made a lot of friends.”
Shane’s son, Tom, is also a trots driver and competed against his proud Grandfather Ron, whose most recent success come with Salute The Wind, a winner of 16 starts.
A service in honour of Mr Gilligan, open to all well-wishes, will be at St Brigid’s Catholic Parish at 66 Aitken St, Gisborne, from noon on Tuesday, May 15.
