Breeding horses to sell may require more patience than just about anything else many of us will ever try. The crazy thing is sometimes the very smallest element can really have a significant effect of the outcome we are trying to achieve.

The team at Benstud standardbreds would know this more than most and to their credit, they take these challenges in their stride. On the morning of Thursday the  8th of February as Benstud had just started loading their very well prepared draft for the “The Allwood Sale” in Adelaide, Craig Judd noticed one of his charges, (the powerfully built and eye catching colt by Betterthancheddar out of the American Ideal mare Upton), looked a little flat.

Craig quickly took the normally very sprightly colt’s temperature and after a look at the projected weather (forecast of 45 degrees in Adelaide) the horse was put straight back into his favourite paddock.  The next morning his temperature was back to normal, and the Upton colt was getting around as if he owned the place, however the opportunity for a new home in Adelaide looked lost.

That was until the owner jumped on the phone and called HRSA looking for a solution as he was so taken with the concept of South Australia running its very first Group 1 race for 2yo’s “The Allwood”. HRSA understanding the situation transferred the Colt immediately to a non-sale entry before that window would be closed come Sunday 12.05pm.

Well I’m happy to report that the very correct colt is 100% back on his feet and the slight temperature was just a 12 hour issue. Whilst this unfortunate event has set his vendor back $1650 for a non-sale entry, this colt can now be sold with all the eligibilities as if he went through the auction ring, and his new owner has nothing to pay (apart from the cost of the yearling) to be a part of Australia’s Greatest Value Race Series, “The Allwood”.

While the Benstud draft averaged over $24,000 for the sales weekend  this fella is being offered up for sale at less than half of this average to enable a quick sale.

For those people interested in joining a very special event please call Craig Judd on 0458 658 273 for details on the colt that still has his chance to win a Group 1 in Adelaide
