A DRINK between mates was the catalyst for Sunday’s inaugural Gilgandra Cup Day at Dubbo Harness Racing Club.
Gilgandra’s own horseman Barrie Batten and Graham Phipps, who has been involved with both Gilgandra Show Trots and the Dubbo HRC, have worked with friends that are just as passionate about harness racing to make this dream meeting come true.
Trots are still showcased at Gilgandra Show but now the Club can extend their support of the industry and they have some strong lures to Sunday’s meeting.
This includes the $10,200 Gilgandra Cup, the $8,160 Gilgandra Windmill Final and the $8,160 Creenaune Family Three-Year-Old Silver Jug.
“We don’t have the infrastructure to run on a regular basis but we have a passion for the sport and we’ve been throwing ideas around for years,” Phipps recently told Dubbo Photo News.
“Oberon already has a bond with Bathurst and we thought if we could do the same with Dubbo, it will allow Gilgandra trainers and supporters to be more involved.”
Entry to this Sunday’s meeting is by donation and all proceeds will go towards Gilgandra Cancer Fundraisers.
All races are sponsored by business and residents from Gilgandra.
