Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) and the Wagin Trotting Club have today made the decision to cancel the race meeting scheduled for Sunday 15 December, due to the forecast of high temperatures.

The Bureau of Meteorology is currently forecasting the temperature for Wagin to be 43°C on 15 December. Despite attempting to run the day meeting as a twilight fixture, the forecasted temperature still remains too high.

The safety and wellbeing of racing animals and industry participants is of paramount concern for RWWA in assessing whether or not a race meeting should be delayed or abandoned in hot weather conditions.

Other changes to race meetings this week include:

  • Ascot, Saturday 14 December: Ascot thoroughbred meeting will run as a twilight fixture, with the first race commencing at 3.03pm.
  • Geraldton, Saturday 14 December: Geraldton thoroughbred meeting will run as a twilight fixture, with the first race commencing at 3.13pm.
  • Cannington, Saturday 14 December: Cannington greyhound meeting will commence at a later slot, starting at 7.57pm.

RWWA has well established hot weather policies that ensure the proper management of extreme weather conditions.

Stewards will continue to monitor the conditions closely over the weekend, and will implement further changes if required.

In addition to running races later in the afternoon, RWWA’s hot weather policy also includes limiting the time participants and animals are exposed to the sun – including shorter parade times and procedures designed to minimise exposure.
