The harness racing industry is shaken by the lack of control over slaughter processes exposed by ABC 7:30 last night.

Despite owners having the legal right to send a horse to slaughter, the harness racing industry seeks to work with Government to identify changes in laws and regulations that may be needed to better protect the welfare of horses, and to ensure humane processes and controls are in place.

At the Harness Racing Australia AGM set down for 8 November, we will be convening:

1.   A meeting of the industry leaders to determine immediate next steps; and

2.  Seeking collaboration with Government at all levels to establish what sort of process is needed to             review and reform laws.

Statement ends.

Chief Executive

Keeper of the Australian Trotting Stud Book
