Harness Racing Victoria – Change In Candy Pole Position Effective 1 June

Following consultation with the Victorian Trainers and Drivers Association, Harness Racing Victoria has determined to move the candy pole further back from each starting point. Instead of the current 50 metres from the starting point, the candy pole at each Victorian Harness Racing track will be moved back to 80 metres before the starting point, with this change to be effective from 1 June 2019.

This change is implemented to limit the opportunity for drivers to be marginally in position at the candy pole and then continue to improve forward with momentum prior to the starting point, thereby assisting in obtaining the lead or a forward position.  It is anticipated this change will also assist horses drawn on the second row being able to maintain their position after the start.

All drivers are reminded of the applicable provisions of Australian Harness Racing Rules 162(1)(h), (i) and (j) in regard to ensuring their drives are in position by the candy pole and by then maintaining that position until the start is effected.
