Kate Gath after Mister Mundaka won the Popular Alm Free for All.
Andy Gath has been very patient with his 6yo gelding Mister Mundaka since he arrived into his care from New Zealand but this Sunday in the Horsham Pacing Cup he is going to let him loose.
Unbeaten when finding the front he has landed the best possible draw in Barrier 1 so no doubt the instructions from Andy to regular driver, his wife, Kate will be to lead
“He was probably due for a good draw and it’s a terrific draw for him to use his gate speed. You would think he will be the automatic leader.” Gath said
“He has never been beaten in front, we know it is going to happen eventually but that is his forte and trying to not let horses get past him. He is a great fighter.”
He steps up to 2700m for the first time since he arrived in Australia a little over 12 months ago but Gath doesn’t think the rise in distance will pose any issues
“You don’t really know if it will be a problem until the day. It probably depends on the tempo of the race. The signs are there that he is a big strong horse.” He said
“He has run good time over the 2200m and until you race in these cups you don’t really get an opportunity to race over this distance. He has run well over this trip a couple of times in New Zealand so it’s not a concern”
Gath is hopeful that if he performs well on Sunday that he might be able to sneak his way into the Victoria Cup field but if he can’t well there is plenty of options around over the next couple of months
“If he could win a Horsham Cup it would give him a little chance to get into the Victoria Cup but there are plenty of riches in Victoria around especially the mobile Country Cups which is his forte.” Gath said
“We will just keep picking off some races and if he could happen to make it into the Victoria Cup we would be more than happy to go into it but contesting the Country Cups will be his target this season.”
It shapes up a fascinating race on Sunday and Gath is wary of I’m Corzin Terror, Gath was most impressed with his Geelong Cup run, and also 2014 Horsham Cup winner Keayang Steamer.
There will be plenty of activities happening on track Sunday and the bumper 8 race card kicks off at 2.32pm.
