Australasian Young Drivers Championships
Annual On-Line

2002 Winner - MICHAEL BELLMAN (VIC)

Victoria captured back-to-back victories when the Australasian Young Drivers Championship culminated at Harold Park on the third night of the Inter Dominion Series.

Michael Bellman 21, from Ararat, finished on top of the points earned in 10 events that began at Maitland on March 3, and moved to Harold Park the following night, then on to Bathurst and Bankstown, ending back at Harold Park. Second was Gavin Fitzpatrick (NSW) with Lauren Pearson (New Zealand) third.

Bellman is the son of well known reinswoman D’Arne Bellman. His father Neville, a former driver, more recently has been club president at Ararat.

Neville himself is a son of a former trainer-driver. D’Arne Bellman on her mother’s side is also a grand-daughter of a member of a once noted family in thoroughbred racing established in  Hamilton in which raced winners of a Melbourne and Australian Cups, numerous other big race winners, and in more recent times the mighty miler Tauto.

The Bellman family train a team of pacers at Ararat. The ‘staff’ include Neville and D’Arne Bellman, son Michael, and 17-year-old daughter Karina. Until these past months, D’Arne did most of the stable driving. Father Neville said after the presentation in Sydney: “Now that he has won the Championship, she might have to give him a few more drives.”
